Letter from Rabbi Yona Marzbach to the Chazon Ish Supporting His Opposition of Rabbi Chaim Na’eh’s Halachic Measurements; Jerusalem, 1943

Letter from Rabbi Yona Marzbach addressed to the Chazon Ish regarding Rabbi Chaim Na’eh’s sefer on Torah measurements (shiurim).

Rabbi Yona heard that the Chazon Ish was clarifying the matter and wrote this letter to him, bringing various proofs to uphold the Chazon Ish’s opinion opposing Rabbi Chaim Na’eh.

The Chazon Ish would customarily use the empty space on the pages of the letters he received for other uses; mainly to note names (kvitlach) for prayer. On the reverse side of this letter as well, the Chazon Ish jotted down such a list of names.

Rabbi Yona Marzbach included a stamp for the Chazon Ish which was never used.

Rabbi Yona Martzbach (1901-1981) was the ab”d of Darmstadt and rosh yeshiva of the Kol Torah Yeshiva in Jerusalem. He was a brilliant scholar and was well-versed in complicated concepts such as shiurim and zemanim. He held give-and-take Torah discussions with the Steipler regarding the matter of shiurim, and in one letter the Steipler urged him to publish his novellae on the topic.

Dated Jerusalem, 1943.
