Letter of Protest by Directors of the Union of Polish Rabbis against the American Consul in Warsaw. Warsaw, 1939.


Severe letter of protest against the American consul in Warsaw for refusing to issue an American visa for the director of the Union of Polish Rabbis to America.

The letter, signed by the following directors of the Union of Polish Rabbis, was sent to the directors of the Union of Rabbis in the United States.

1. Harav Menachem Mendel Alter Hy”d, Av Beis Din of Pabianice and Kalish (1878-1942), was the youngest son of the Sfas Emes. A genius and exalted tzaddik, he was one of the prominent leaders of European Jewry between the two world wars. In the early years of war, he went into hiding. After being taken to the Warsaw ghetto, he hosted regular minyanim and tischen in his quarters in the ghetto until he was deported to Treblinka where he perished al kiddush Hashem.

2. Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Meir Kanal Hy”d (1862-1843) was the Rav in Błaszki and a noted Rabbi in Warsaw who often traveled to the Sfas Emes for guidance.

3. Harav Shlomo Dovid Kahana, Raavad of Warsaw, became Rav in the Old City in Jerusalem after the war and was among the foremost Rabbanim involved in freeing agunos after the war.

4.
Harav Reuven Yehuda Neufeld Hy”d was Raavad of Nowy Dwór and its environs. He was born in 1864 and perished in the Holocaust.
