Hundreds of Handwritten Hagahos by the Tosfos Shabbos and Yitav Lev of Satmar on Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim

Hundreds (!!!) of annotations by the holy hand of Rabbi Refael Meisels, author of ‘Tosfos Shabbos’, and the Admor Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Teitelbaum, Av Beis Din of Sighet and author of ‘Yitav Lev’. This sefer also features one autographed annotation with the Rebbe’s famous acronym of YYT”V.

These marginalia are written in the wide margins of a volume of the Maginei Eretz Edition of Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim (Amsterdam, 1754).

In leaf 251, Rabbi Refael Meisels refers the learner to his sefer ‘Tosfos Shabbos’: “See my sefer T”S Ch. 276…”

These hagahos were printed by the Tosfos Shabbos’ son Rabbi Chaim Meisels, who was one of the esteemed dayanim in Lvov, in ‘Sefer HaYakar’ (Lvov, 1795). Several of the hagahos were also included in the ‘Sefer HaPla’im’ which was printed in the later edition of ‘Tosfos Shabbos’ (Zolkova, 1807).

Rabbi Refael Meisels (circa 1698-1778), Av Beis Din of Harkov and Paritzk and author of ‘Tosfos Shabbos’, was one of the legendary Rabbanim of 18th century Poland and among the greatest of the Achronim. He was a descendant of the Rema, Bach, and a grandson of the Chelkas Mechokek whom he refers to as “my grandfather” in the present hagahos (leaf 65b). He was renowned for his remarkable sanctity and abstention from worldly pleasures.

Rabbi Refael gained worldwide acclaim for his magnum opus ‘Tosfos Shabbos’ which became one of the fundamental sefarim on Hilchos Shabbos and was studied extensively by Gedolei Yisrael, among them the Pri Megadim, Machatzis Hashekel, Mishnah Brurah and other notable poskim of the ensuing generations. His wisdom and righteousness was extolled by the contemporary Gedolim of his time such as the Noda B’Yehudah, Baal Haflaah and Rabbi Itzik’l of Hamburg who all inscribed remarkable haskamos to his sefer.
The Maggid of Trisk, who authored the ‘Magen Avraham’, attested that the author of Tosfos Shabbos was “a holy man of G-d” and journeyed specially to pray at his tomb (Hakdamah to Toldos Yosef Landau, Av Beis Din of Iasi in Note #5.)

The Admor Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Halberstam (1808-1883) was the author of ‘Yitav Lev’ and founder of the illustrious Sighet Chassidic dynasty. He was the son of Rabbi Eliezer Nissan, Av Beis Din of Dhurovitch, who was the son of the Yismach Moshe. Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Halberstam was renowned as one of the greatest Rebbes and poskim in Hungary. In 1858, he was appointed Av Beis Din of Sighet where he founded a famous yeshivah and was eventually crowned Rebbe, attracting thousands of avid chassidim from across Hungary and beyond. His famous sefarim include ‘Yitav Lev’, ‘Yitav Panim’, ‘Rav Tuv’ and ‘Shu”t Avnei Tzedek’.

The margins of the present volume of Shulchan Aruch feature a handful of hagahos by his holy hand, chiddushim on the Magen Avraham, Taz and some corrections. On leaf 18a, the Yitav Lev sketched the shape of the letter shin in order to clarify the Magen Avraham’s intention. His autograph appears at the end of one annotation on leaf 29a. The title page of the sefer includes a list of kvittelach from his chassidim and talmidim.
