Kushta Reish

Sefer Yesod
Rare Treasure from Constantinople! Pristine copy!
Midrash Tehillim. First Edition. Constantinople, 1512

The first edition of Chazal’s ancient Midrash on Sefer Tehillim.

Beautiful copy, bound in original Constantinople binding!

Rishonim refer to this sefer as ‘Midrash Shocher Tov’ after the opening words of the sefer which begin with “Shocher tov yevakesh ratzon…”

During this period, the Constantinople press was the global center for Hebrew book printing.

A very rare and important sefer; already back in 1891, Midrashic scholar Rabbi Shlomo Buber wrote in the foreword to his edition of ‘Midrash Tehillim’ (Vilna, 1891 leaf 55a) that this sefer is “a precious find.”

The colophon states: “The work was completed on the twenty-fifth of the month of Adar 1512 here in Greater Constantinople which is under the reign of our master the king, His Royal Highness Sultan Bayezid, may Judah be redeemed in his days, and may Israel dwell in peace. Amen!”

Constantinople, 1512. First edition. Page count: [52] leaves.
Page Size: 25 cm.
Condition: Good with minor stains on last leaves. Leaf 32 slightly damaged, but restored. Original Constantinople engraved leather binding.
