Amulets in Jewish Lore
Sacred amulets are ancient items dating back to the Talmudic era or even further. Maseches Shabbos discusses whether it is permissible to carry an amulet on Shabbos, and teshuvos authored by various Geonim reveal how amulets work.
“There are several things that angels do based on what they see…This is why amulets are written and the names of the angels are pronounced, in order to draw the angels to assist the [person] in this matter.” (Teshuvos HaGeonim Harachbi, Ch. 373)
