Likutei Shirim – Manuscript of Songs and Poems. Illustrated Title Page Modena, Italy 1820

Impressive, handwritten liturgical manuscript of songs and poetry featuring a striking title page with an architectural border and depiction of angels in black and red ink. The manuscript is complete with a preface and index.

Content: An anthology of 56 songs and poems for Shabbos and special occasions “from new and old sefarim", including
several songs in Ladino.
The manuscript includes a detailed table of contents of the songs and poems in alphabetical order.

At least seven of the songs and poems included in the present anthology are not documented in Davidson’s Otzar Hashirah V’hapiyyut.

The title page bears the following inscription:

Anthology of Songs
Compiled from sefarim to sing and praise the G-d Who lowers and elevates,
By me, the youth among youths, dust of the scribes,
Yedidya Mordechai Tilio
Here, in Modena,
In the year [which has the numerical equivalent of] Shaarei Zimra

Leaves 16a-17b and 17b-19b feature songs in Ladino, “Adoneinu Elokeinu” followed by another song in Ladino, the Italian poem Diamo Gloria el Criatori.

On the first page of the manuscript, the scribe wrote a brief inscription in a box and signed his name with a mysterious signature and acronym.

It was written in honor of Yedidya Mordechai Tiliou of Modena.

Genazym is aware of at least two other manuscripts that were owned by the same Yedidya Mordechai Tilio of Modena. These include Seder Pitum Haketores which is presently in the National Library of Russia (the distinct shape of the letters attest that both manuscripts were written by the same scribe), and the Yizkor Ledger of the Ashkenazic congregation of Modena which is currently in the Berlin State Library.

Modena, 1820.

Page Size: 13 cm.
