Illustrated manuscript
Order of prayers for women. Italy, early 19th century
A beautifully illustrated prayer-book of entreaties and supplications written especially for women, with instructions in Italian.
Every prayer and entreaty is preceded by instructions in Italian, and the manuscript opens with a passionate foreword in Italian extolling the power of a woman’s sincere prayers.
The manuscript title page is framed in a delicate border, and the two subsequent pages feature two full-page illustrations. Sprinkled throughout the manuscript are another 12 illustrations and designs.
The present prayer-book encompasses special entreaties typical for Jewish women: order of Hafhroshas Challa, a prayer recited after lighting candles on behalf of the husband and family; a prayer to conceive on the night of immersing in the mikvah; prayers for each month of pregnancy and a special prayer for the start of the ninth month; prayers before and after childbirth; prayers for livelihood and sustenance; and prayers recited when the Sefer Torah is removed and replaced in the Ark.
