Anthology of Yiddish prayers and entreaties for women inscribed and illustrated on parchment for Mrs. Yittel of Königsberg.
The title page is colored with an architectural border enhanced with drawings of animals. The verse bears a drawing in red ink of gates, alluding to the name of this book of prayers – Shaarei Rachamim which translates literally as, “Gates of Compassion”. The last page is a full-page drawing of the menorah and several of the opening words are inscribed in green ink. The colophon is bordered by flowers topped by a crown.
The title page margin bears the following inscription:
“Created by Avraham son of Rabbi P. of Laszlo, currently a shaliach tzibbur, shochet and bodek and sofer stam here in the holy community of Kineshburg (Königsberg), Neumark.”
The colophon on leaf 4a states: “This [book of] entreaties belongs to the noble and modest woman Mrs. Yitel shet[ichyeh], wife of the brilliant and scholarly Moreinu Harav Moshe ben Rabbi C. of Stuttgart… here in Kineshburg (Königsberg), Neumark, today, 21 Tammuz…5533 (1773).”
