Spectacular Pewter bowl wedding gift.
Gifted to Chaim Appel and his bride Sarah Dreyfus 1780
Exceptional quality engraved pewter bowl gifted to Chaim Appel and his bride Sarah Dreyfus in honor of their marriage. The upper part of the rim is engraved with the Tree of Knowledge and the serpent coiled around it, with Chava standing on the right and Adam on the left. To Chava’s right is a deer and to Adam’s left, a lion. Inscribed around the perimeter of the rim is the verse,
“He who finds a wife finds a good thing” along with the names, “Sarah daughter of Abraham Dreyfus” and “Chaim son of Moshe Appel”.

The center of the bowl features a three-dimensional engraving of the wedding hall with the groom, bride, witnesses, officiant and guests. The scene is superbly engraved down to the most minute detail, including the wedding party’s attire, reception hall, curtains and arches characteristic of that era. A double-headed eagle, a symbol of royalty, is engraved atop the heads of the bride and groom and within it the Hebrew letter “shin”. The letter shin likely hints to the bride’s name, and combined with the fact that her name precedes the groom’s, it is assumed that the benefactor was a member of the bride’s family. The floor of the wedding hall is supported by columns, and between them is a flying scroll, inscribed with the verse, “
May your G-d rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over the bride, (year) 5540 (1780)”.

Condition: Good; slightly dented.
Size: 42.5 cm diameter.
Provenance: Yechezkel Toporowitch Collection
