The ‘Chazon Ish’s Handwritten
Instructions for Building Mikvaos

A large page in the handwriting of Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, author of ‘Chazon Ish’, with detailed instructions listed in five sections, in which he explains concisely his halachic opinion on how to construct a kosher mikvah.

Chazon Ish mikvah – known to be on an extremely high standard of kashrus. The Chazon Ish was an expert in the field of Mikvaos and incorporated many practical innovations in the construction of mikvaos.
Maran HaChazon Ish was known for his endless dedication to the state of mikvaos in all regions of Eretz YiIsroel.
The kosher mikvah – the cornerstone of the purity of the Jewish family was of utmost importance to the Chazon Ish and therefore he devoted much time to strengthening this mitzvah, seeing to it that a new mikvah was founded in every settlement that did not have a mikvah, and to renovate those that needed renovation, seeing to it that no Jewish city or town should be without a kosher mikvah ( Pe’er Hador vol. 2 p.151)
Under his initiative and encouragement, more than 90 mikvaos were built in EY according to his halachic instructions (Maseh Ish vol. 1 p. 202, D. Mintzberg, Mivneh Hamikvaos VeHechsherom, Jerusalem 1973 p.54).

In the way of building the mikvah, the Chazon Ish considered both the halachic side and the aesthetic side in order to facilitate the purity of the daughters of Israel, as this is reflected in the instruction before us in which he explains his reasoning in building a ‘Otzar Zeriah’ only so that the polluted water that has been standing for a long time from the watering tank does not enter the water of the mikvah ’cause if the pampered would know this, they may have used it as a reason for refraining from immersing in the mikvah, which we however continuously endeavor to improve the condition of the mikvah and remove any excuses from using it, and if it would be discovered the Ministry of Health they would have disqualified the mikveh for this’.

[1] page, undated. Size: 21 x 27.5 cm, The Chazon Ish wrote on a page that had a tear, therefore, despite the page having a tear, all text is complete and intact.
