Sefer Tanya – Halachos and Minhagim for the whole year by Rabbi Yechiel son of Rabbi Yekutiel Anav from the 13th century Rishonim.
 
The sefer Tanya was the primary source of halacha and minhagim for Italian communities. The “Shalsheles HaKabbalah” writes “the Italian Jews had a righteous teacher for their customs”. His rulings are quoted in the Bais Yosef and the Mahari”k.
 
The author served as Rosh Yeshiva in Rome, and authored the sefer ‘Maalot HaMidot’, he was from a distinguished family of rabbis – the ‘Humble [Anavim] family ‘ which, according to tradition, were exiled to Rome after the destruction of the Second Temple (see below).
 
The Cholophon: “Minhag Avos –  sefer HaTanya was completed in the month of Sivan, the year five thousand [two hundred] and seventy-four to the creation of the world… And Hashem will return you….and gather you from all the nations from which he has scattered you [5274] by Shmuel Latif here in Mantua.

There is an inscription at the beginning of a manuscript of a Machzor in Roman custom, from 1514:  “I heard from the honorable Rabbi Mordechai Dato that he received this tradition from earlier generations, that four family heads left Jerusalem and came to Rome with Titus, and these are:  The [Anavim] humble family, the Nearim family, the Adumim family, and the Latifim family their acronym Ana’l. And they founded the synagogue called ‘the synagogue of the four heads’.
