Chiddushim in halachah and explanations of the 39 constructive Melachos prohibited on Shabbos by Rabbi Shaul ben Rabbi Dovid, Rosh Mesivta and Av Beis Din in Podolia (Russia).
Rare sefer. This sefer was already regarded as rare in the times of the Chida as he inscribed in Shem Hagedolim regarding this book “it is not easily found”.
In this enlightening work on the 39 melachos of Shabbos, the author presents a comprehensive explanation of each Melachah (work), beginning with references in the Gemara and continuing with the relevant writings and opinions of the Rishonim and Achronim until the author’s time. At the end of each section, Rabbi Shaul presents his own chiddushim and the practical halachic ruling.
The Magen Avraham assigned great importance to this work, citing it several times in his writings. The sefer features approbations by the great Rabbis of the author’s era, among them the Maharsha, Shla Hakadosh and Kli Yakar.
In the preface to his work, the author emphasizes the importance of learning hilchos Shabbos and expresses frustration with the ignorance regarding these critical halachos that are relevant on a weekly basis. His words were so powerful that the author of the later work Shvisas Shabbos copied and quotes his words in the preface to his sefer.
Rabbi Shaul ben Rabbi Dovid (b. circa 1570) was a disciple of Rabbi Hersh Schorr, Av Beis Din of Brisk who was the prime disciple of the Rema (he is mentioned in his sefer on leaf 53b). Other works by Rabbi Shaul include Chanukas Habayis on Chanukah (Prague, 1616) and Seder Tefillas Haderech (Cracow, 1641).
