Sefer Yesod

Mordechai

Riva de Trento, 1559
Fundamental halachic work

Halachic rulings in order of Shas. Contains rulings and teshuvos of the great Ashkenazic sages by Rabbeinu Mordechai ben Hillel.

The Mordechai is a fundamental halachic work and a primary source of halachic rulings among Ashkenazic Jewry. Many of the rulings of the Rema in Shulchan Aruch are based on the Mordechai and the scholars in the Rema’s yeshivah in Cracow studied this sefer regularly.

Until the present edition, the Mordechai was printed together with Hilchos HaRif, with each section printed alongside the relevant tractate. Here, for the very first time, the complete work of the Mordechai was printed as a single unit, offering a unique learning experience to the scholar who wishes to learn it in completion.

The Mordechai was originally printed in Constantinople in 1509 and subsequently in Venice in 1521 (primarily based on the previous Constantinople edition). The present Riva di Trento edition was printed based on the Venice edition along with annotations.

Rabbeinu Mordechai ben Rabbi Hillel (d. 1298) was a prime disciple of Maharam of Rothenburg, Rabbeinu Peretz and Rabbi Yechiel of Paris, and a brother-in-law to both the Smak and author of Hagahos Maimonios. He was murdered al kiddush Hashem in the Rintfleisch Massacres in Nuremburg in the year 1298.
