Rabbi Moshe Alshich’s (1506-1620) sefarim and commentary were universally accepted by Jewish congregations around the world. The Arizal attested that the Alshich’s drashos were the epitome of truth (Chida, Shem Hagedolim), and the Minchas Elazar of Munkacs writes that the Arizal once remarked that upon glimpsing the heavenly entourage descending to attend the Alshich’s lectures, he joined them as well.

Rabbi Yitzchak of Posen, the spiritual master of the Magen Avraham, recounted that the Alshich Hakadosh appeared in a dream to Rabbi Yitzchak’s own rebbi Rabbi Avraham of Barr during the times of the Chmielnicki Massacres and told him that since Rabbi Avraham cherished his sefer and learned it weekly, the Alshich had descended from heaven to rescue him from death. He instructed Rabbi Avraham to flee Barr that night, and indeed, the following day, the Jewish community was destroyed and all its members were killed, Hy”d (Printed in Kitzur Alshich. Amsterdam, 1698).

Venice, 1601-1606. Five volumes. Page Size: 19.5 cm. Condition: Aside from minor, light water stains, the set is complete and in impressive condition. All volumes are bound in matching new half-leather binding and stored in a beautiful matching case.

Marginalia: Both the beginning and end of Shir Hashirim, Eichah and Koheles feature marginalia written in Italian script, dating back to the printing era. The end of the Shir Hashirim features a commentary on a verse in the megillah which ends with a handwritten comment, “I heard this from the mouth of Moreinu Harav Rabbi Yitzchak Gershon n”y, ” one of the leading scholars and editors of Venice. Rabbi Yitzchak Gershon, a talmid of the Alshich, personally proofread and facilitated the printing of some of the Megillos at the latter’s behest (see title page of Megillas Esther).

Extolling the Works of the Alshich Hakadosh
“This man Moshe is renowned among the gates of the noteworthy, a preeminent lecturer and commentator, the illustrious Rabbi Moreinu Harav Moshe Alshich, who illuminated the eyes of Yisrael with his commentary on all 24 books, and there is none like it among all the commentaries that can be learned by all… Everyone reaps pleasure and gathers every Shabbos and festival to hear his elucidations. Lecturers find in his commentaries a strong, sturdy stake upon which to lean; and from his sweet words that enter the hearts, rebukers also found knowledge to rebuke the nation…” (Approbation of the Noda B’Yehuda to Toras Moshe by the Alshich (Karlsruhe, 1770).
