Responsum by the Levushei Mordechai
Rabbi Mordechai Winkler
Av Beis Din of Mád, 1913
A teshuvah regarding one whose custom was to eat matzah shemurah from the time of harvest. The letter discusses whether it is permissible to be lenient in a year with an abundance of rain, and if he must perform hataras nedarim.
The teshuvah is completely handwritten and bears the autograph of the Levushei Mordechai Harav Mordechai Halevi Winkler, Av Beis Din of Mád. It likewise contains additional responsa regarding the correct blessing on machine matzah which does not qualify as bread; using matzah as lechem mishneh on Erev Pesach that falls on Shabbos; and kinyanim used to sell chametz. The letter contains a reference to the ruling of the Chasam Sofer.
The letter begins with the author’s apology for being unable to write at greater length due to the pressure and constraints of Erev Pesach. “Your letter came before me…Yet due to the pressure of the imminent holiday, I cannot write lengthily for I was barely able to access this sheet of paper while the rooms are all being cleaned and whitewashed, as is the custom of our righteous women…”
