Rabbi Shimshon Altman (1894-1944) was the son of Rabbi Yehudah Altman, author of Shu”t Mei Yehudah. A disciple of the Daas Sofer, he received semichah both from his venerable master and the Gaon of Unsdorf, author of Be’er Shmuel. Rabbi Shimshon married the daughter of Rabbi Shimon Sofer, a son of the Yalkut Eliezer, and succeeded his illustrious father-in-law as Rav and Rosh Yeshivah of both Szentendre and Paks. He was deported to Auschwitz along with his kehillah on 17 Tammuz, 5704 (1944) where he perished al kiddush Hashem.
Rabbi Shimshon’s written legacy includes the three-volume Shiboles Hanahar which includes shailos and teshuvos and chiddushim both on Torah and Shas. His customs were printed in Nachal Sorek (Bnei Brak, 2016).
One of Rabbi Shimshon’s greatest talmidim was the Admor Rabbi Yochanan Sofer of Erlau, author of Imrei Sofer who writes in his approbation to Shu”t Shiboles Hanahar: “There is no way to estimate or describe the pleasure that we drew from listening to his illuminating lessons and gazing into his holy face which exudes radiance…especially when I entered into his sanctum, when he was closeted in his study with his sefarim and learning, adorned in tefillin…For he is like an angel of the G-d …”
