Bris Menuchah. Europe, 1600s

Antique Kabbalistic work!

Bris Menuchah is one of the earliest known authentic kabbalistic works that seeks to explain the name of Hashem and names of the heavenly angels. This sefer is generally ascribed to Rabbi Chamai Gaon, although there are others who attribute it to Rabbi Avraham bar Yitzchak MiRamon HaSephardi.
This manuscript was inscribed in neat, beautiful handwriting and features attractive margins. The sefer is replete with Holy Names and names of angels which are all written in block letters and embellished.

The leaves of this manuscript feature multiple marginalia by a kabbalistic scholar who wrote on the first page “Behold, I am learning this sefer to unite Kudshe Brich Hu and His Shechinah, to publicize his G-dliness that He is Ruler.”

The manuscript encompasses the vast majority of the sefer, ending on leaf 38a (compared to the Amsterdam printed edition that encompasses 40 leaves).
Bris Menuchah is one of the oldest and most reliable kabbalistic works. Kabbalists throughout the generations were effusive in their praises of this sefer, and some even assert that the author was taught with ruach hakodesh, directly from the mouth of Eliyahu Hanavi!

In his preface to Eitz Chaim, Rabbi Chaim Vital inscribes: “Sefer Bris Menuchah is truth. It was authored by a sage and scholar who is great in Torah and wisdom, who concealed his words in depth, and it was composed by the soul of a tzaddik of old to whom Eliyahu appeared and taught.”

The Ramak in Pardes Rimonim (Shaar Hanekudos Ch. 1) writes: “Bris Menuchah is a wonderful sefer explaining the Name [of Hashem], and surely these words of kabbalah [were taught] from mouth to mouth, or from the mouth of an angel [as] they are not concepts understood with precision and depth of intellect, but with an exalted perception that resembles ruach hakodesh.”
The present sefer has been cited repeatedly by the greatest kabbalists of all times, among them the Ramchal, Vilna Gaon and exalted Chassidic masters (see Degel Machaneh Efraim, Parshas Bereishis citing his grandfather the Baal Shem Tov, and the writings of the Maggid of Mezritch).
