Sefer Hakavanos L’Ha’Ar”i
First Edition.
Venice, 1620
Intentions of prayer and collection of customs by the Arizal and kabbalistic explanations from the Ar”i z”l upon numerous teachings of Chazal.
This sefer was printed less than fifty years after the passing of the Arizal, during the latter years of his prime disciple Rabbi Chaim Vital.
Sefer Hakavanos L’Ha’Ar”i is the very first sefer published upon the Torah and legacy of the Arizal.
The colophon at the end of the sefer states
: “The labor was completed on Tuesday, the 5th of the month of Av…year 5380, in the same year that the all-encompassing Rabbi and saintly kabbalist Moreinu Harav Rabbi Chaim Vitaly ztvk”l was recalled to the heavenly Yeshivah.”
This sefer was published by the kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Trinki, a Rabbinical emissary of the city of Tzfas (see Shluchei Eretz Yisrael p. 254).
Distinguished Provenance
The title page bears the initialized autograph of the holy kabbalist Rabbi Elazar Nachman Poa (d. 1659), disciple and confidante of the Rema of Pano and author of Midrash B’chiddush (Venice, 1641). The Chida writes that the signature “ARNN” represents the first and last letters of Rabbi Elazar Nachman Poa’s name.
The title page margins likewise feature the autograph of Rabbi Yehuda Mindola, Av Beis Din of Mantua, who passed away in 1652.
The leaves of the sefer encompass numerous handwritten annotations. Leaf 2b reveals lengthy kabbalistic discussion regarding the recitation of Viduy after prayers. At the top of this annotation, the author added the words “In the name of the Ar”i”. The end of the sefer has two handwritten leaves regarding revelations of the future.
