Halachic rulings arranged in order of Shas by Rabbi Yishmael Hakohein Tanuji, foremost Egyptian rabbi in the 16th century.
Rabbi Yishmael Hakohein Tanuji descended from an illustrious family of Tunisian kohanim. He relocated to Egypt where he became the great leaders in the land. His signature appears first on the letter dated 1569 in support of Don Yosef Nasi which was printed in Shu”t Ranach Vol. 2 Ch.55.
He also signed his name on letters printed in Teshuvos HaMabit Vol. 2 Ch. 206. He authored the present Sefer Hazikaron in 1543. The synagogue where he prayed, Beit Haknesset Rabbi Yishmael, named after him, was extant until the early 20th century.
The Chida in Shem Hagedolim praises this sefer and writes that it is written in “a clear, concise language.” He also cites Rabbi Yishmael Hakohein Tanuji in his halachic works.
This sefer was meticulously edited and proofread. The first pages bear a handwritten notification regarding errors that entered the print, and many leaves in the sefer feature handwritten corrections in the same handwriting. It is likely that these corrections were either instructed by the author, or he himself wrote it.
