Teshuvos, halachic rulings and writings of Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein, one of the great Ashkenazic Rishonim.
Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein (1390-1460), author of Terumas Hadeshen, was one of the great Ashkenazic Rishonim, and one of the last of his era. He had a close relationship with the Maharil, Mahariv, and Maharam of Mintz, who all held him in the highest esteem.
Terumas Hadeshen is one of the foundational halachic works, both Rabbi Yosef Karo’s Shulchan Aruch, as well as the Rama’s glosses on the Shulchan Aruch base many of their halachic rulings on the opinion of the Terumas Hadeshen.
The work includes two volumes:
Volume 1: Terumas Hadeshen which includes 354 teshuvos (354 is the gematria of ‘deshen’.)
Volume 2: Psakim U’Ksuvim which includes teshuvos in practical halachah.
The Achronim point out a fundamental difference with practical ramifications between the two volumes. The first volume is composed of the author’s own hypothetical questions, while the second volume is composed of practical halachic responses to queries posed to Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein and therefore carry greater authoritative weight. (see Shulchan Aruch Yoreh 196:20; and Shem Hagedolim; Letter yud; 402).
Each volume was published separately with its own title page; here both volumes are bound together. They are completely intact including all title pages and indices.
This book in such excellent condition is extremely rare.
Distinguished copy with owner’s signatures and marginalia.
