letters written by Rabbi Avraham Drushkowiz Mashgiach of Volozhin with a letter from the Rosh Yeshivah of Volozhin Rabbi Refael Shapiro to the parents of a talmid of the Volozhin Yeshivah who returned home for Pesach after being in the Yeshivah for a while. In the letter, they describe the young man’s great achievements in learning and his fine comportment.
“His conduct was pleasing and proper in all matters, and he knows the material learned during the zman well.”
Rabbi Refael Shapiro of Volozhin (1837-1921) was the son of Rabbi Leibele of Kovno. In his youth, he joined the yeshivah of Volozhin, where he quickly became a rising star and drew the attention of the famed Netziv of Volozhin who took him as a son-in-law. In 1865, he began relaying shiurim in the yeshivah which gained repute for their brilliance, sharp analysis, and stunning breadth of all realms of Shas and the Rishonim. Eventually, he accepted a position as Rav, and his position in the yeshivah passed to his son-in-law Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik of Brisk. When the Volozhin Yeshivah reopened in 1899, he returned as Rosh Yeshivah and stood at its helm until his passing in 1921.
Rabbi Avraham Drushkowiz Hy”d was the Av Beis Din of Shat and last mashgiach in the celebrated Volozhin Yeshivah, a position he filled between the years 1904-1915. He was a disciple of the Alter of Kelm and studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor in the famous Prushim Kollel in Kovno where the latter conferred semichah upon him. Rabbi Avraham greatly influenced the study of mussar in Volozhin. He authored Shaarei Hora’ah on Yoreh Deah (Kovno, 1933) and published Chiddushei HaGr”a on Brachos and Shabbos (Kaiden, 1940). He perished in the Slabodka ghetto.
