Rabbi Menashe of Ilya,
Disciple of the Vilna Gaon
___
Chiddushim and commentary on the Torah and Chazal; the essence of the world and its spiritual rectification; and mussar lessons by Rabbi Menashe of Ilya.
Rabbi Menashe of Ilya (1767-1831) was privileged to study under the Vilna Gaon and perpetuate his legacy in Torah. In the present sefer, he writes “Without him [the Gr”a], Torah would have been forgotten among Yisrael” (Leaf 38b). Rabbi Menashe followed the Torah of the Vilna Gaon, focusing on the clarity of pshat instead of on pilpul (see Leaf 73b).
Adhering to the Vilna Gaon’s methods, Rabbi Menashe authored original chiddushim that had never been discussed by previous authors of sefarim. His sefer Alfei Menashe was highly acclaimed by the scholarly world.
