Rabbi Yosef Karo’s Magnum Opus
Tur Orach Chaim by Rabbi Yaakov son of the Rosh, surrounded by Sefer Beis Yosef by Rabbi Yosef Karo.
This first edition was printed by the author himself.

Orach Chaim, which encompasses halachos that are applicable to daily life, was the first among the sections of the Beis Yosef to be published. Since Orach Chaim was so widely studied, few remaining complete copies survived, especially in such impressive condition.

Rabbi Yosef Karo [1488-1575] established the foundations of halachah for all generations in the Beis Yosef. In this monumental work, he compiled the sources of all halachos and rulings of the Poskim, along with differences of opinion among the Rishonim, and forms the basis for his rulings in the Shulchan Aruch.

Rabbi Yosef Karo authored his magnum opus over the course of 20 years, and then spent another 12 years editing it and preparing it for print.

He entitled it Beis Yosef based on the instructions of the Maggid who visited him. [See Maggid Meisharim; Parshas V’Zos HaBracha.]

“And it spread through all of Yisrael, and found favor and acclaim in the eyes of all who saw it, and all the wise men and Rabbis valued it greatly, and treasured it above all the sefarim that came before it…our eyes have seen how all those who delve into, teach and determine the law, use this work, and would not lift a hand or foot without it to decree the law or teach the straight path…” (הקדמת כנסת הגדולה אורח חיים)
