Autographed letter by Sir Moses Montefiore to Rabbi Zecharya Lipschitz, grandson of the Tiferes Yisrael. The letter, written on Montefiore’s personal stationery, with the heading “Holy Land” expresses his personal thanks for the receipt of his sefer Minchas Shmuel (Berlin, 1861).

Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784-1885) World famous personality was a British activist and philanthropist, who devoted his life to help and assist his oppressed jewish brothers and sisters around the world. He donated colossal sums of money to Jewish charities and was especially passionate about assisting the Jewish settlements in Eretz Yisroel. He founded Mishkenot Sha’ananim in 1860, the first settlement outside Jerusalem’s Old City.
In his quest for defending Jewish rights he traveled to  Russia and Morocco  and other countries appealing to kings and emperors to negate blood libels and rescind evil decrees.
