Tzemach Dovid is regarded as the first proper Jewish history book of its kind integrating both Jewish and general history.
This edition known as Tzemach Dovid HaChadash was printed precisely one hundred years after its first edition published in 1592 and includes an additional section – the third section which records the history from 1592-1692 (Leaves 78-95). During this time, the world underwent massive changes and upheaval, among them the Thirty Years War; expulsions; deadly fires and plagues; and the catastrophic revelation of Shabbetai Tzvi, to name just a few.
The front of the sefer features two title pages, the first boasting beautiful illustrations with copperplate engravings that depict the images of Dovid and Shlomo Hamelech, and the four corners depict four animals that symbolize the Four Kingdoms of Babylonia, Midea, Rome and Greece.
