15th of the Month of Compassion, 5714 (1954)
“K’sivah V’chasimah Tovah in the Book of Complete Tzaddikim”
In Elul, 1954, Rabbi Shomo Zalman Auerbach acceded to the editor of the Torah journal Hamaayan, a publication of the Pressburg Yeshivah, to write an essay regarding the use of an electric Shabbos clock and whether it is permissible to advance or delay the time by moving the pins.
In the present letter, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman adds arguments to support the teshuvah printed in the journal and presents further arguments on the topic of grama and koach rishon (primary force) on Shabbos.
The margins of the letter contain the tzaddik’s heartfelt
“Blessing for a K’sivah V’chasimah Tovah in the Book of Complete Tzaddikim.”
The letter opens with Rabbi Shlomo Zalman’s apology for his delayed response which he attributes to his father’s illness. He asks the recipient to pray for his father’s health and recovery and notes his name, “Chaim Yehuda Leib ben Rachel.”
Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910-1995) was the author of Minchas Shlomo and a leading halachic authority in the last generation who dealt with many contemporary questions that reflected technological advancements of the times.
