Machzor Kavanas HaPaytan. 4 volumes

First Edition. Amsterdam, 1750

Splendid set with original elaborate leather bindings!

Machzor for High Holy Days and Three Festivals in Ashkenazic rite with “Hadras Kodesh” and “Kavanas Hapaytan ” commentaries in Yiddish.

4 Volumes, complete set of machzorim with impressive title pages in pristine condition. This set is in very good condition and well-preserved.

This was the first edition of machzorim printed with the famous work “Kavanas HaPaytan”.

In it, the author presents a brief introduction to every piyyut in the prayer text, explaining the composer’s intentions in the piyyut. These short paragraphs were later introduced into many new editions of machzorim.

This set includes 4 volumes in their original ornate leather bindings which feature gilded engravings both on the front and spine.

Each volume of the set boasts a striking illustrated title page. To the best of Genazym’s knowledge, there is no bibliographic information regarding a complete set with all 4 title pages extant. (There is one known set with 2 of the title pages.)

An approbation by Rabbi Aryeh Leib, Av Beis Din of Amsterdam, praising the innovative concept of Kavanas HaPaytan is printed on the verso of the title page in each volume. Rabbi Aryeh Leib was a son-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi and father of Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam.

The identity of the author of Kavanas HaPaytan is unknown until this very day.
