Manuscript. “Mohel Buch.” Würzburg, 1863-1900

A mohel’s ledger documenting 86 circumcisions carried out in Germany over the course of 37 years between 1863 and 1900.

Among the cities and towns documented in the ledger are Busenberg, Innsbruck and the mohel’s hometown of Erlenbach. Each event notes the names of the infant and father, date of circumcision, and in the earlier parts of the ledger, the date of birth, as well.

The first page of the ledger features the passages of prayer “V’charos imo habris” and “Az yashir” . These parts of prayer were customarily recited by the mohel and sandak, line by line, on the day of the bris. Tehillim Ch. 12, “Lamnatzeah al hashminis” appears on the last page.

The ledger is bound together with Sefer Habris which encompasses the laws and order of a bris milah by the Mohel Rabbi Binyamin Neiderhapeim with Yiddish translation by Moshe Brick (Frankfurt, 1841).

Würzburg, 1863-1900. Ledger encompasses [17] leaves + [12] blank leaves. Size: 16.5 cm. Good condition. Original red leather binding with gilded engravings, worn at corners and spine.
