Machzor according to the Ashkenazic Rite. Augsburg, 1536
Complete Copy!

Machzor with prayers, piyyutim and yotzros for the Festivals, High Holy Days and special Shabbosos (Chanukah, Purim, Four Parshiyos).

The Augsburg Machzor is one of the premier antique machzorim and renowned for its importance and high quality of print. It was printed in large format (27 cm) with large, clear letters in dark ink.

Colophon: “This machzor was printed and completed in Ashkenazic rite on Tuesday, 11 Adar, 5291 (1531) in capital Augsburg by Chaim Hamechokek ben David Shachor.”

Augsburg, 1536. Chaim Shachor Press. [254] leaves. 27 cm. Begins with Shochen Ad on the second side of Leaf 1. Complete copy!

Handwritten headers appear at the top of the pages, along with amendments and customs throughout the text, which supports the assumption that this machzor was used by a chazzan.
To avoid confiscation by Christian authorities, a self-imposed censorship was conducted, and a thin line or border appears in various places in the text. In certain sections, there are also handwritten suggestions for more delicate versions.

First and last pages as well as several other pages in the body of the machzor are professionally restored at margins. Stains. Antique leather binding.

Bibliography: Winograd, Augsburg 8. Ginzei Yisrael #321.
