Rabbi Shmuel Laniado
Baal Hakeilim
Harav Shmuel Laniado was a member of the illustrious Laniado family and Chief Rabbi of Aleppo in the era of the Beis Yosef. Harav Shmuel was one of the premier commentators on Tanach who authored the Kli Chemdah, Kli Yakar, and the Kli Paz and was therefore known as Baal Hakeilim. Harav Shmuel Laniado passed away circa 1616.
His commentary is unique in the sense that he offers both original interpretations along with quotes from great Rishonim and contemporary scholars, primarily the sages of Tzfas such as the Ramak, Maharam Alshich and the Ari Hakadosh.
