Halacha Classic !!! Shach Yoreh De’ah. First Edition. Cracow, 1646

Rare work published by the Shach himself!

Sefer Sifsei Kohein is a fundamental work of novellae, practical halachah and explanation of Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah by Rabbi Shabsi Cohen, the Shac”h. It is one of the main sources of halachic rulings today.

This first edition was the only one that the Shach himself prepared for print during his lifetime and is exceptionally rare. For just 2 years after its printing the Cossacks began the riots of 1648-49 throughout Poland and most  copies of this edition were lost or destroyed.

The Cracow edition of Sifsei Kohein is regarded as the most precise and exact version, as errors crept into later editions. In this edition, the Shach added comments citing sources of the Shulchan Aruch and the Rema which were still included in several editions printed in the 1600’s but were omitted from future printings.

The Shach was only 24 years old when he published the Sifsei Kohein. Despite his remarkably young age, his work was enthusiastically received by the scholars of his generation who were astonished by his breadth of knowledge, keen insights and erudition. He received approbations by the Tosfos Yom Tov who was the leader of the generation; Harav Heschel of Cracow, Harav Yehoshua of Cracow, Harav Sheftel ben HaShla and Harav Yonah Thumim.

Cracow, 1646. First edition. 3, 2-258 [248] leaves. Page size: 31 cm. Ornate antique-style leather binding. Good condition.
