Responsum in Halacha, autographed by the Shoel U’meishiv. Lvov, 1865

Responsum in halachah by Rabbi Yosef Shaul Halevi Nathanson, author of Shoel U’meishiv, to Rabbi Yaakov Shlomo Halperin, Av Beis Din of Premishlan.

written by a scribe with the autograph of the Shoel U’meishiv at the end of the responsa.

Harav Yosef Shaul Halevi Nathanson (1808-1875) served as Rav of Lvov for two decades and was regarded as ‘a genius among geniuses.’ He was the undisputed Torah luminary of his generation and corresponded extensively in halachah with Rabbanim  around the world. Even in his childhood, he was praised for his supreme character and righteousness, and he was esteemed by the Chasam Sofer and other gedolim of his generation who unanimously commended his prodigious halachic work.

Written correspondence between Harav Chaim of Sanz and Harav Yosef Shaul Halevi attests to the great esteem in which the Divrei Chaim held the Shoel U’meishiv.

Lvov, 1865. Minor tears in right margin with few letters missing. This responsum was not published in Shu”t Shoel U’meishiv.
