Autographed letter by Harav Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein, Av Beis Din of Krasne, Poland, to his relative Hagaon Harav Akiva Yosef Shlesinger
Hagaon Harav Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein Hy”d, Av Beis Din of Krasne (1858-1944) was the son of Harav Yaakov Koppel Lichtenstein, Av Beis Din of Batlan, and a brother of the tzaddik Harav Hillel Lichtenstein. He learned Torah from his father and uncle and was a beloved pupil of Harav Menachem Mendel Panet of Daash, who described him as “The rabbi who is sharp and well-versed, fears G-d and is complete, a treasure” (Shu”t Shaarei Tzedek Orach Chaim Ch. 36).
In 1841, he was appointed Rav of Krasne where he served his congregation faithfully for 60 years and supported a local yeshivah. Harav Lichtenstein was renowned for his outstanding piety, intense prayers, and fervent endeavors to zealously guard tradition. He perished in Auschwitz at the age of 86. His son Hagaon Harav Hillel Lichtenstein of Krasne authored Kavanas Halev.
This letter alludes that his son Rav Chaim Tzvi Hy”d, who was later appointed Av Beis Din of Byshtom, was compelled to escape Europe at the time and flee to Eretz Yisrael. It notes that if his plans were exposed, he would be in grave danger.
