Handwritten Annotations by Harav Eliezer Zussman Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks on sefer Machaneh Efraim
The margins of this sefer Machne Efraim contain over one hundred annotations in the sacred handwriting of the Yalkut Eliezer.
One note cites an explanation by “My father in law, the genius” Hagaon Harav Yoel Unger, Av Beis Din of Paks and author of Responsa Riv”a.
Hagaon Harav Eliezer Zussman Sofer (1825-1903) was Av Beis Din of Paks and the author of Yalkut Eliezer and other famous sefarim. A venerable Hungarian sage and disciple of the Chasam Sofer, he was born in Pressburg and circumcised by the Chasam Sofer himself who later taught him. Harav Eliezer also studied primarily under the tutelage of the Chasam Sofer’s son the Ksav Sofer and the Maharam Schick, and succeeded his father-in-law as Ab”d of Paks, Hungary, filling this noteworthy position until his passing in 1903. He authored the 3 volume Yalkut Eliezer, Sefer Hamakneh and others.
Harav Eliezer Zussman Sofer raised his grandson Harav Yaakov Sofer, who later became Av Beis Din of Tet. The latter attests in his sefer Mishpachos Sofrim p. 213 that his grandfather owned a vast Jewish library and would often write notes in the pages of the sefarim.
