Colorful Illustrated Ketubah on Parchment.

Colorful Illustrated Kesubah Corfu, 1834.

This kesubah is proof of the marriage of the bridegroom Chaim Refael de Mordo to his bride Malka Dembitza de Ozmo on 11 Nissan, 5594 (1834).

The text notes an additional date marking the number of years since the destruction of the Temple (1766).

The de Mordos were a prestigious family who dwelled in the Jewish community of Corfu for generations.

The Kesubah text is inscribed in square Hebrew and semi-cursive rabbinical Sephardic script. The bridegroom’s and witnesses’ signatures, followed by the signature of the officiating rabbi on the right corner, appear at the bottom of the text in Sephardic style.

The text is bordered by architectural pillars adorned with vivid colorful flowers and leaves. The top border is arched, a cartouche depicting a woman (the bride) playing a string instrument for a gentleman (the groom) holding a square (the Ketubah) before her.

Beneath this image are four illustrated squares representing the four seasons with feminine and putti figures.

Ketubot from the Greek island of Corfu are exceptionally rare.

Corfu, 1834: Parchment size: 60×50 cm. Stains and fold marks. Some fading of text.
