Passover Haggadah – Midrash B’Chiddush. First Edition. Venice, 1641

Famous commentary on the Haggadah by the kabbalist Rabbi Elazar Nachman Poa of Reggio.

The holy kabbalist Rabbi Eliezer Nachman Poa (d. 1659) was renowned by the acronym of his name, Arnan. As one of the greatest kabbalist of his times, he was the prime disciple and confidant of the Rama of Pano, and his contemporaries described him with remarkable praises as “G-dly, pious, holy, humble, and a holy man of G-d” (Igros HaRamaz, Letter #17).

The author founded a society in Reggio called Chevras Ha’aluvim; and it was the alumni of this society who published this work. The preface was written and signed by 25 members, who call themselves the ‘Aluvim, the wretched ones.’

One of Harav Eliezer Nachman Poa’s most famous novellae is his commentary and description of the fifty plagues (makkos) mentioned in the Haggadah that the Egyptians endured on the Red Sea which does not appear in any other source (see ppg: 18, 2-25, 1).
