Important Handwritten Letter of the Admor Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar Describing His thoughts on moving to Eretz Yisrael
Long, double-sided letter penned by Harav Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar to his relative Rabbi Yoel Ashkenazi in Teveria. The letter discusses his personal reflections about returning to Eretz Yisrael versus continuing to live in America.
On the 21st of Kislev (Yom Hahatzalah), Harav Yoel Teitelbaum arrived in Switzerland broken by the travails of the war. After several months of recuperation, he journeyed to Eretz Yisrael where he resided for a year before traveling to the United States.
The return address printed on this letter: “Yoel Teitelbaum, Av Beis Din Satmar, in Yerushalayim Ir Hakodesh, temporarily in Brooklyn, New York” indicates his intention to return to Eretz Yisrael.
This important letter reveals his considerations in his decision to remain in America: “There is a gathering of a number of important charedi Jews here, and yet the overall spiritual state, needs Divine mercy.” The Admor’s primary motive in remaining was to positively influence the spiritual situation of American Jewry. He asks, “Please write me in detail whether there is a danger of coming to Eretz Yisrael due to the Arabs…“For here they are worried about the situation in Eretz Yisrael following the revolts.”)
The Rebbe concludes, “Please remember me [in your prayers] at the holy sites, for a great salvation and for Divine mercy.”
He signs off longingly, “And may Hashem Yisborach help that we meet soon [in Eretz Yisrael] in nachas and peace of mind, and may we merit to serve Hashem Yisborach with a good heart and to expand the boundaries of kedushah.”
Also contains a personal letter with words of blessing to his surviving relative Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi, son of the abovementioned Rabbi Yoel and a letter by his gabbai Rabbi Yosef Ashkenazin in the margins.
