The Brisker Rav on Knesset Elections
Lengthy Objection by Rabbi Amram Blau
During his lifetime, the Brisker Rav refrained from voicing a public opinion regarding voting for the Israeli Knesset elections. However, as the fourth Knesset election approached shortly after the Brisker Rav’s passing in 1959, a letter was published in his name endorsing the Agudat Yisrael party list.
The publication of this letter aroused the ire of the Eidah Hacharedis and Neturei Karta in Jerusalem who fiercely contended that the letter was a fraud. They countered that the letter supporting the elections referred to elections that had taken place in the city of Brisk in 1928 and did not refer to the Israeli elections at all.
In this letter, Harav Amram Blau writes lengthily on this subject, stating that the Brisker Rav had adamantly opposed voting in the Zionist Knesset elections until his dying day and that his children followed suit.
Handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Amram Blau. Signed by Rabbi Avraham Cohen Roth, legendary activist in the Eidah Hacharedis.
