Autographed Letter by the Sdei Chemed to the Rabbis of Jerusalem

Letter by Hagaon Harav Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini, author of the Sdei Chemed, to the venerable Rabbanim of Jerusalem—Rishon Lezion Rabbi Refael Meir Fenjal and Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar, author of Yisa Brachah.

Calligraphed by scribe; autographed by
“Hatza’ir Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini who is called Chacha”m.” An additional shorter autograph appears on Side 3 along with several glosses.

Harav Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini (1833-1905) was one of the great Sephardic sages, and authors of Torah literature. He is famous for his magnum opus Sdei Chemed, a comprehensive sefer on Talmudic topics that serves as a Talmudic encyclopedia.

Harav Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini was born in Jerusalem, but relocated to Constantinople in his youth. He was appointed Rav in Jewish Crimea, and in 1899 returned to the Holy Land where he subsequently accepted the coveted position of Chief Rabbi of Chevron.

This letter discusses sending monetary donations to Jerusalem; the estate of a Jerusalem native who remained behind in Crimea; and the search for sifrei halachah that he needed in the course of authoring Sdei Chemed.

Bilohirsk, Crimea, circa 1884. 2 folded leaves; 3 sides. 21×26 cm. Good condition.
