Autographed Document on Behalf of the Jewish Community in Chevron by Rabbi Nosson Amram. Senigallia, 1836
This document features the autograph of Harav Nosson Amram, emissary of the Jewish community in Chevron, Rav of Alexandria and author of Kinyan Guf and Kinyan Peiros.
During this era, Italy was stricken with an outbreak of the cholera pandemic which severely impacted the economy and, naturally, reduced donations and charity, as described in the body of the document.
Harav Nosson Amram (circa 1790-1871) was one of the great sages and emissaries of Eretz Yisrael. Following heavy persecution and taxation of the Jewish residents of Chevon and a deadly earthquake that ravaged the city, he embarked on a mission to fundraise jointly for Chevron’s Sephardic and Lubavitch communities.
For a fascinating glimpse of the travels of Rabbi Nosson Amram, see Shluchei Eretz Yisrael pp. 686-690 and Toldos Chabad B’Eretz Hakodesh ch.11.
Senigallia, 1836. Page size: 13x21cm. Rabbi Nosson Amram’s autograph appears twice on the certificate. Minor stains, holes and slight tear in margin restored.
