This prayerbook, encompassing both Minchah and Arvit, is written according to Sephardic rite. Handwritten by the philanthropist Yechezkel Yehoshua Yechezkel-Avraham-Gabbay, it includes Petach Eliyahu, Kriat Shema Al Hamittah, and the Tekunei Shabbat of the Arizal.
Rabbi Yechezkel inscribed on the first page:
“I departed Baghdadon the 8th of Tammuz, 1842 and I wrote this before I left. By the youth Yechezkel Yehoshua Yechezkel-Avraham-Gabbay.
The great philanthropist
Rabbi Yechezkel Yehoshua Yechezkel-Avraham-Gabbay of Bombay (1824-1866) was a Torah scholar, exceedingly pious and stringent in his observance of mitzvos. His mother was the sister of Harav Abdallah Somech who authored his well-known Zivchei Tzaddik at the behest of his nephew Yechezkel Yehoshua. In the year 1842, he settled in Bombay, India where he married the daughter of the philanthropist David Sassoon. He distributed much of his wealth to charity and his home was always open to scholars and Jewish fundraisers.
