Certificate Appointing Messenger to Deliver Get Autographed by Av Beis Din of Constantinople Rabbi Chaim Moda’i & Rabbis of Beis Din. 1759

This deed (shtar) appoints a delegate to deliver a get written in the Constantinople Beis Din in 1759. It is signed by the leading Rabbis of the era–Rabbi Chaim Moda’i, Rabbi Shlomo Alfandri, and Rabbi David Rozanis.

Rabbi Chaim Moda’i (circa 1710-1794) was a great Sephardic sage who served as Rabbi in Tzfas, Constantinople, and then for 17 years as Rav of Izmir. He journeyed across Europe as an emissary of the Tzfas Jewish community and in the course of his travels, met the Nodah B’Yehudah who praised him highly (see Shu”t Nodah B’Yehudah, Yoreh Deah, Ch. 87-88). He corresponded with the Chid”a (see Shu”t Chaim Sha’al Vol. 2 Ch. 20) and authored many responsa which appear in Shu”t Chaim L’Olam (Izmir 1879-1885).

Rabbi Shlomo Alfandri (d. 1774) was the son of the famous Rabbi Chaim Alfandri. He served as Av Beis Din and Dayan in Constantinople for 30 years.

Rabbi David Rozanis was one of the honorable sages of the Beis Din in Constantinople. He was presumably a relative of the Mishneh Lamelech, and his signature appears alongside the above Rabbanim in the responsa of Chaim L’Olam and Rosh Mashbir (photos attached). He published Sefer Charedim in Constantinople in 1754, and his foreword appears in the beginning of the sefer.

Rabbi Chaim Moda’i discusses the halachic queries that arose regarding this specific get in his sefer Tiv Gittin #34 (Jerusalem, 1875).
