The present letter, handwritten and autographed by the great Lithuanian sage Harav Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, Av Beis Din of Kovno, was addressed to his grandchildren Harav Eliyahu Zev and Zalta Tobelevsky and includes the following words of blessing and encouragement to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“All is for the best…and do not worry, for my hope is that Hashem, Who is Good, shall help you in your standing and your good circumstances soon. With much success…”

Harav Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor’s aide Rabbi Yaakov Lifschitz writes of the Tobelevskys in his sefer Toldos Yitzchak p. 49:

“His granddaughter, the daughter of his only daughter Maras Zlata, wife of the prominent and praiseworthy Torah scholar, who is complete and knowledgeable in the sciences, Moreinu Harav Eliyahu Tobelevsky, was taken by Rabbeinu into his home as a daughter after her mother passed away. She inherited all of her mother’s talents and attributes, and through her, he found solace upon the passing of his only daughter. Even after he wed her to this special man in the month of Adar, 5654 (1884), he supported the couple for several years in the course of which he learned Gemara, Rashi and Tosfos regularly with him due to his love of him…”

Harav Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor (1817-1897) was a Torah luminary and uncontested spiritual leader of Russian and Lithuanian Jewry in his era. Regarded as one of the greatest meishivim of all time, he authored countless responsa, many of which appear in Shu”t Be’er Yitzchak, Ein Yitzchak and Nachal Yitzchak.
