“I devoted nearly all my strengths with mesirus nefesh for this sacred building…”
Handwritten & Autographed Postcard by the Admor Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Halbershtam of Klausenburg. Amsterdam, 1956
Handwritten, autographed postcard by the Sanzer Rebbe Harav Yekusiel Yehuda Halbershtam regarding the construction of Kiryat Sanz in Netanya. The postcard was mailed from the airport in Amsterdam, Holland.
In his letter, the Rebbe urges the members of the construction committee to settle permanently in Kiryat Sanz; make every effort to build a mikveh, Beis Medrash and Yeshivah; and furnish him with weekly progress reports.
This postcard was written and dispatched in the course of his global journey throughout the summer of 1956. The postcard bears the image of an airplane of the Dutch-owned airline KLM and is postmarked August 15, 1956.
In the last lines of his letter, he also asks to hear word of “Hashem’s war against Amalek, y”sh, regarding the public convention.” Here, he is presumably referring to the Orthodox battle against the construction of a Reform Temple in Jerusalem, in which he was actively involved during his time spent in Eretz Yisrael.

The Birth of Kiryat Sanz in Netanya
“This day is a great holiday for me!” proclaimed the Sanzer Rebbe Harav Yekusiel Yehuda Halbershtam at the cornerstone-laying event of Kiryat Sanz in Netanya. “Many a time I wondered why I stayed alive, and why I remained the sole scion of my house and family…Today I clearly know that it all occurred so I could merit laying this cornerstone of Kiryat Sanz in Eretz Yisrael with my own hands.” (Lapid HaEsh p. 528)
A festive event took place on 21 Adar, 5716 (1956), the yahrtzeit of the Noam Elimelech. Shortly after the ceremony, the Rebbe embarked on a lengthy journey throughout the United States and Europe to raise funds to realize his dream of establishing Kiryat Sanz in the Holy Land.
