Handwritten and Autographed Responsum by Rabbi Avraham Amigo. Jerusalem, 1678.
Handwritten and autographed halachic responsum by Hagaon Harav Avraham Amigo of Yerushalayim to Rabbi Aharon Ben Chaim of Chevron regarding the topic of
basar v’chalav. Written in Jerusalem circa 1678.
Hagaon Harav Avraham Amigo (circa 1610-1683) was one of the venerable sages of Yerushalayim of old, a pious and righteous kabbalist and halachic authority whose rulings are cited by the Pri Chadash. He was revered by the greatest Sephardic sages. Maharam Ben Chaviv referred to him as “Gadol doreinu, the greatest of our generation” (Ezras Nashim p.61) and Rabbi Moshe Chagiz called him “A minister and sage in Yisrael, ” (Shu”t Shtei Halechem ch.42). He spearheaded the movement to expel Shabsai Tzvi from Yerushalayim in 1664, and a collection of his novellae was published as Chiddushei Rabbi Avraham Amigo (Jerusalem, 1990).
Written on the back of this letter are the words “From Yerushalayim to Chevron…The absolute genius Moreinu Harav Aharon Ibn Chaim…” along with many accolades and praises of the addressee.
This letter was addressed to
Rabbi Aharon ben Chaim [II], leader in Chevron and later in Izmir where he passed away in 1688. The Chida in Shem Hagedolim attests that he saw a manuscript with Rabbi Aharon ben Chaim’s response to Rabbi Avraham Amigo.
