Handwritten and autographed letter by the Av Beis Din of Eibenschütz, Harav Ber Oppenheim to Harav Shmuel, Raavad of Nikolsburg.
Harav Yissachar Ber Oppenheim (1791-1860), Av Beis Din of Eibenschütz, was the son of Harav Chaim Oppenheim – a descendant of Harav Dovid Oppenehim.
Harav Yissachar Ber was a disciple of the Baruch Ta’am and corresponded frequently with the Chasam Sofer who recommended for the position of Rav of Obuda (Oiben-Yashan). The Chasam Sofer writes in his endorsement letter, “He is eminent in the wisdom of our holy Torah, a great scholar in leading Hashem’s nation… I do not even come close to relating a modicum of the honor and praise that he is due.”
The majority of this letter is filled with Torah novellae, although it opens with his invitation to Harav Shmuel’s son Rav Shlomo Leib (future Rav in Nash) to join him in Eibenschütz after the latter had written to him regarding his aspiration to learn from him.
Eibenschütz, 1857. Page size: 23x14cm. Double-sided letter on blue paper. Small tear on bottom corner.
