Harav Shmuel Ginz (1815-1892) was the son of Harav Bunim Eiger, Av Beis Din of Mattersdorf. He was a disciple of both his uncle Harav Akiva Eiger and the Chasam Sofer. See
Shu"t Chasam Sofer for the blessing the Chasam Sofer sent Harav Bunim Eiger upon the birth of his son Shmuel. He received ordination from the Chasam Sofer before his marriage and became Av Beis Din in the year 1851.
Most of these novellae
have never been published, although a few were published under Harav Shmuel’s name in the compilation
Vayilaket Yosef, 1901.
These novellae were recorded by one of his scholarly students, with his own notes in the margins. We know that the writer was related to the author as recorded on page 40b: "This I heard from the mouth of my brother-in-law who is exceptional in Torah and fear of Heaven, Harav Elazar Bunim Ginz, son of Harav Shmuel Ginz — Av Beis Din of Oberahan …".
