Lineage of Tzaddikim: Tombs of Tzaddikim in Eretz Yisrael. Mantua, 1561

An early and very rare sefer , noting the exact location of famous tombs of the forefathers and sages in the Holy Land, including the Patriarchs, Prophets, Tannaim, Amoraim and other venerable sages throughout the ages. The book notes the precise location of each tomb; verses and descriptions portraying the respective sage and his life; and special prayers to be recited at each burial site. This book was published by Rabbi Gershon bar Rabbi Asher Skarmilla.

As noted in the introduction on the verso of the title page, the author himself visited Israel, and marked the locations of the tombs that he personally visited. He cites locations of dozens of tombs, among them the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Chevron; Tomb of Rachel in Bethlehem; Tomb of Yosef in Nablus; Tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in Meron; Tomb of Yehonasan ben Uziel in Amukah; Tombs of Rabbi Akiva and the Rambam in Tiberias; and Tombs of early sages in Jerusalem. He also includes special prayers  recited to end the exile and restore comfort and solace to Zion and Jerusalem.

Printed on the first pages of the book is “The Prayer of Tzaddikim, Aleihem Hashalom” a special prayer to be recited by one who visits sacred tombs.

Manuta, 1561. 104 leaves. size: 14 cm. Margins of first 4 pages and last page professionally restored.
