In his early youth, he gained repute as the ‘Genius of Delititz, ’ and by the age of bar mitzvah enrolled in the Mir Yeshivah where he was very close to the mashgiach Harav Yerucham Levovitz. With the outbreak of war, he fled with the Yeshivah to Vilna where he studied for a period of time under Harav Boruch Ber Lebowitz and the Brisker Rav before continuing on to Shanghai. The couple ultimately made their way to Detroit, where Rav Bakast was marbitz Torah for half a century.
