Original Signed Proclamation Banning Participation in the First Israeli Elections. Jerusalem, 1949.

We have determined based on the Torah’s view and the opinions of our holy forefathers and Rabbanim [who were like] heavenly angels, the founding fathers and progenitors of the Yishuv based on the pure Yerushalmi legacy…”

“It is strictly prohibited to participate in the elections, so long as the Israelis nominate and elect men who abandon our faith and Torah laws to rule the land… Therefore, it is forbidden to participate and take part in the Israeli Legislative Election…”

This original broadsheet was signed by the venerable sages of Jerusalem, among them Harav Zelig Reuven Bengis,  Harav Mordechai Chaim of Slonim, Harav Pinchas Epstein, Harav Dovid Halevi Jungreis, and Harav Yisrael Yitzchak Halevi Reisman.

The Israeli Constituent Assembly Election, held on January 25, 1949 in the newly independent State of Israel, was the first election in the history of the Israeli government. This proclamation was published six weeks earlier on December 12, 1948.
